James Caan was born on 26 March 1940 in The Bronx, New York, U.S.A. He was born to Sophie and Arthur Caan. His parents were German - Jewish refugees and his father worked as a meat dealer. He spent his childhood in Sunnyside, Queens. He attended P.S. 150 Christopher Street School, a public school in Brooklyn and Rhodes Preparatory School. Both the schools were located in New York. Then, for higher education, he joined the Michigan State University where he studied economics.
He was a football player at the university and later he shifted to Hofstra University, but could not graduate. The acting bug bit him, and he went on to do graduation from the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York City, and he was privileged to have Sanford Meisner, as one of his instructors.
He is also interested in martial arts and has trained with karate master Tak Kubota, for nearly thirty long years. He has also taught the use of martial arts, at the Culver City Police department.
He is presently married to Linda Stokes, and has two children from her. His first wife was Dee Jay Mathis/Mattis and they have one child named Tara A. Caan. They remained married from 1960-1966. His second marriage was with Sheila Ryan that lasted for almost a year, from 1976-1977. He has a son Scott Caan from her. He again got married to Ingrid Hajek in 1990 and they separated in 1995. They together have one child, named Alexander James Caan.
He has appeared on television for the series like- ‘Kraft Suspense Theatre’, ‘Combat!’, ‘Ben Casey’, ‘Dr. Kildare’, ‘Get Smart’, ‘The Untouchables’, ‘The Alfred Hitchcock Hour’, ‘The Wide Country’, ‘Naked City’, ‘Route 66′, ‘Alcoa Premiere’, etc. He played the role of a dying footballer in a TV Movie named ‘Brian’s Song’ (1970). Later, this TV movie was also released in theatres. Earlier, he had played a similar role, of a brain-damaged footballer, in ‘The Rain People’, in 1969.
His first appearance for a film was for ‘Lady in a Cage‘ in 1964. He starred in another film named - ‘Red Line 7000‘ in the next year. Afterwards he appeared in some more films like ‘El Dorado‘ and ‘Countdown‘. His other Hollywood films includes ‘T.R. Baskin‘, ‘Cinderella Liberty’, ‘Rollerball’, ‘Funny Lady’, ‘A Bridge Too Far’, etc. He acted in some more Hollywood films - ‘Harry and Walter go to New York’, ‘Comes a Horseman’, ‘Thief’, ‘Chapter Two’, ‘The Godfather’, etc.
He has directed the film ‘Hide in Plain Sight’ in 1980. In the period of 1982 to 1987, he went through depression due to a number of reasons including, his sister’s death and his growing problems with cocaine. As such he did not act in any films during this period.
In 1987, he appeared in a film based on the consequences of Vietnam War on the US homefront and the name of the film is ‘Gardens of Stone’. He also acted in ‘Alien Nation’, ‘Dick Tracy’, ‘Misery’, ‘The Program’, ‘Honeymoon in Vegas’, ‘Bottle Rocket’, ‘Eraser’, ‘Bulletproof‘, ‘Poodle Springs’, etc.
He has recently appeared in ‘Mickey Blue Eyes’, ‘The Way of the Gun’, ‘The Yards’, ‘City of Ghosts’, ‘Night at the Golden Eagle’, ‘Dogville’, and ‘Elf’. He acted as the US president, in 2008, in the film ‘Get Smart‘.
He earned the nomination for the prestigious Oscar Awards in 1973 for the Best Actor in a Supporting Role for ‘The Godfather’. In 1972, he was nominated for an Emmy Award for the Outstanding Single Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for ‘Brian’s Song’. He also earned the nomination for the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Performer in a Children/Youth/Family Special for ‘The Incredible Mrs. Ritchie’ in 2004. He was nominated for the Golden Globe Awards in 1976, 1975, 1973 and 1966, under different categories. In addition he was nominated for and has won various other awards under different categories.
